Brad Anderson is a director. He has helmed two episodes of Boardwalk Empire.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Anderson was born in Madison, Connecticut, the son of Pamela Taylor Anderson, a community services administrator.Before he began his film career, he attended Bowdoin College, where he majored in anthropology and Russian. He then went to London to finish his film education before returning to Boston.
Earlier career[]
Anderson began his television directing career with "Bones of Contention" a seventh season episode of Homicide: Life on the Street in 1999, written by Eric Overmyer and James Yoshimura. David Simon was a producer for the series at this time. In 2002 Anderson returned to television to work on Simon's first original series The Wire, produced for HBO. Anderson directed the first season episode "The Cost". Anderson returned to The Wire in 2006 to direct the fourth season episode "A New Day". Overmyer was now a consulting producer for The Wire. The Wire ended in 2008 after five seasons. Simon and Overmyer went on to co-create Treme. Anderson directed the first season episode "Shallow Water, Oh Mama" for Treme.
He is also a regular director for the science fiction thriller Fringe.
His films have varied from Sundance Film Festival audience favorites (and romantic comedies) Next Stop Wonderland (1998) and Happy Accidents (2000) to darker films such as Session 9 (2001) and The Machinist (2004), starring Christian Bale. He was inspired to use the Danvers State Hospital for Session 9 because he drove past it every day. His work on the psychological drama The Machinist has helped earn Anderson a cult following.
He directed the well-received Transsiberian (2008), a thriller starring Woody Harrelson, Emily Mortimer, and Ben Kingsley, and the horror film, Vanishing on 7th Street (2010), starring Hayden Christensen, John Leguizamo and Thandie Newton. Notably, both Transsiberian and The Machinist were funded by Anglo-German production companies.
Boardwalk Empire[]
Anderson joined the crew of Boardwalk Empire as a director for the first season in 2010. He helmed the ninth episode "Belle Femme".
He returned as a director for the second season in 2011 and directed the ninth episode "Battle of the Century".
During Boardwalk Empire[]
In the break between season 1 and 2 of Boardwalk Empire Anderson returned to Treme to direct the second season episode "Carnival Time". He continued to regularly direct episodes for Fringe. He also directed the first season finale of AMC crime drama The Killing entitled "Orpheus Descending".
