The club's madam, Gillian Darmody, introduces Evelyn to the girls on December 31, 1922. She warns them that she will fine them for drinking with their customers. Evelyn is intrigued by Richard Harrow and Gillian explains that he is their caretaker. ("Resolution")

Evelyn recites the poem "Dream-Love" by Christina Rossetti when New York gangster Gyp Rosetti visits the brothel on January 8, 1923. He does not understand its significance but says that it was very pretty. ("Bone for Tuna")
