Stevens 311 (Sawed Off)

A sawed-off, or sawn-off shotgun, also called "lupara", is a double-barreled shotgun whose barrels and buttstock have been cut after fabrication.

A popular weapon for mob assassinations, its shortened length makes it easy to conceal and multiplies damage, guaranteeing that the target will be killed. On the other hand, it also makes the gun poor in range and accuracy, making it only useful at close range.

The sawed-off shotgun was invented by shepherds in Sicily to protect their livestock, hence the Italian name "lupara", which means "for the wolf". It was introduced in the United States by Sicilian immigrants in the 19th century and instantly gained popularity among gangsters. The fabrication and possession of luparas is illegal in many countries; in the US the first restrictions were passed already by 1900.

Season 1[]

Posing as a replacement wardrobe girl, Kitty sneaks a lupara in a building owned by Charlie Sheridan while he helds a meeting with Johnny Torrio, Jimmy Darmody and Al Capone, and hands it to Capone hidden in his coat. Capone then fires the lupara on Sheridan and his second, injuring both. Capone leaves Sheridan to Jimmy and discharges the lupara again on the other man, finishing him. ("Family Limitation")

Months later, Richard Harrow uses another sawed-off shotgun to kill Ignatius D'Alessio and his young brother Pius. Ignatius is shot on the gut after opening the door and Pius is shot on the face. ("A Return to Normalcy")

Season 2[]

Alfred Gordetsky uses a lupara in his attempt to kill Manny Horvitz. Although he manages to surprise Horvitzat the door of his shop, Gordetsky aims for the head and the poor accuracy of the weapon only manages to graze Horvitz's shoulder. Gordetsky tries to fire again from a closer range, but Horvitz traps his hand with the door, preventing Gordetsky from either shooting at Horvitz or fleeing. Horvitz then grabs Gordetsky through the door's glass window, and after a struggle inside the shop he kills Gordetsky with a meat cleaver hit to the head. ("Battle of the Century")
