| On the eve of prohibition, Atlantic City Treasurer, Nucky Thompson, condemns alcohol at a Women's Temperance League meeting, where he is seen by Margaret Schroeder, pregnant housewife who later comes to him for help in getting her alcoholic husband Hans a job. Later that evening, the treacherous Nucky privately lets his ward bosses in on an opportunity for huge profits selling bootlegged liquor. At a countdown to prohibition party at Babette's Supper Club, he assures Jimmy Darmody, a recently returned WWI vet, that his appointment as "Man Friday" to the new Chief Clerk of the Fourth Ward, Paddy Ryan, will lead to bigger and better things. Jimmy, meanwhile, has higher aspirations - as well as a lack of patience - and ends up making a deal behind Nucky's back that could have dire consequences for the both of them. Read more...

| Nucky is paid a visit by straight-arrow Agent Nelson Van Alden, who feels that Nucky has pinned the recent shootings on a scapegoat (Hans Schroeder). Nucky utilizes his brother Elias' position as sheriff, to visit Hans' widow Margaret Schroeder in the hospital and help do some damage control. Nucky receives a visit from Margaret before heading out for a night on the town, as she has come to return the hush money Elias had given her. She asks for his help providing for her young children, but through an honest job. After an incident involving Al Capone's beating of a reporter in Chicago, Nucky contemplates the upcoming election with his aging mentor, Commodore Louis Kaestner. Read more...

| Nucky negotiates a deal with Chalky White, while on the personal side of things he begins to question his relationship with Lucy. Jimmy is named as one of the shooters in the hijacking-gone-wrong by the lone survivor of the ordeal who overheard Capone call him by name. This generates heat from the feds, and as a result, he is forced to leave Altantic City in favor of Chicago. After a young African-American man is hanged, Chalky White is alerted, and he promptly summons Nucky. Since the victim was presumably lynched by the local Ku Klux Klan - Nucky is forced to give up a much larger percentage of the profits from his deal with Chalky White in order to get him to silence the community which looks to him for leadership. Margaret Schroeder is given a job at a local women's clothing store by Nucky, which is run by a very uptight french woman who looks down on Margaret's humble origins and lack of education. | The episode opens with a glimpse into Capone's twisted side as he wakes Jimmy up by firing a revolver into the pillow right next to his head. This appears to have damaged Jimmy's eardrum, as he cannot hear with that ear, and blood is seen running out of it. The story of the Anastasia impostor appears in the paper, and Margaret (along with thousands of others at the time) finds a bit of escape in the idea of this mystery. Her romanticized fantasy world implodes, however, when this "Anastasia" is revealed to be a fraud. Gillian Darmody's firey independence is in display when she receives a visit from Lucky Luciano. She treats him with cold disdain, deflecting his questions, insulting him, and slamming the door in his face. A Ku Klux Klan meeting is shown in progress, just before Nucky's sheriff brother Eli and his deputies rush in to arrest their leader. It is assumed that the Klan is responsible for the recent hanging of a young African-American man in town, and with tensions at a boiling point with Chalky and the rest of the African-American community, the Klan leader is turned over to White as a sort of peace offering. | As the episode begins, Margaret Schroeder is awoken from her sleep by the sound of men unloading barrels of beer (to be dyed green for Nucky's Celtic Dinner) at Hiawatha Garage behind her home. Annoyed by this, but attempting to be diplomatic, Margaret bakes soda bread for Nucky so that when she confronts him about it she will be bearing a gift, and therefore difficult to ignore. Moving forward in the morning, we then see Nucky and Eli as they sit down for coffee in the lobby of Nucky's residential hotel. Eli's resentment of his brother's social status is on display when the waiter asks Nucky, and not Eli, if he wants anything for breakfast. Eli confronts the waiter, who apologizes, asks him the same question, and is dismissed since Eli didn't actually want anything in the first place. Eli announces his intention to make a speech at the Celtic dinner, despite his brother advising otherwise. At this time, Margaret arrives with fresh baked soda bread for Nucky, only to be dismissed by the man whom until this point had shown her only patience and attentiveness. Margaret, hurt by this, and by Nucky's suggestion that she leave the bread with the bellhop, throws the bread away. Read more...

Lucy is jealous of Nucky's affection for Margaret Schroeder and tries to bully her at the dress shop. Margaret must make the choice of being a "lady" or providing for her family but she is taken back when she moves to a new apartment and meets the other "concubines."In Chicago, Jimmy gets his revenge with a bold power play involving Charlie Sheridan. | Nucky goes to Chicago for the Republican national convention and leaves his brother, Eli, in charge. Eli feels a little under appreciated when only one person shows up to ask for help, Ward Boss O'Neill. Meanwhile, at the convention Nucky is convinced to switch the candidate he is backing when he realizes that Senator Edge has given his road money to Frank Hague. Instead, Nucky swings New Jersey's votes for Warren Harding who consequently wins the election. Read more...
