Walton is an unseen character mentioned in Boardwalk Empire. He was a rich banister who had a house in County Kerry, Ireland. Margaret Thompson, then aged 16, worked in the house as a maid in 1909. She claims that Walton let her read freely in his vast library, which included George Sand's novels among others. ("The Ivory Tower")
Some time after starting to work in the house, Margaret started a romantic relationship with Walton's son, Douglas, and became pregnant with his child. She refused to tell who was the father to her family and claimed to have been raped in an attempt to avoid being sent to a Magdalene Asylum for "fallen women". Since she was not believed, Margaret resorted then to steal the money that her family had been saving to send her brother Eamonn to the United States and went to America herself. She miscarried during the voyage. ("Peg of Old")
Since "Walton" is an Anglo-Saxon name, it's probable that the banister and his family were descendants of English colonists in Ireland and therefore Protestants, making their willingness to accept Margaret's children as their own even less likely.
